as a joint u.s. afghan special team went in to save the life of dr. dilip joseph, an american doctor who was kidnapped two days before with two members of his afghan staff. the staff was released earlier when a small ransom was made but the taliban was asking for $100,000 for dr. joseph's release. general john allen felt that his life was in imminent danger and then called for the rescue mission as special operations team lured the taliban in, saying they would pay the ransom. the taliban came. instead, they were met by this team who killed at least six taliban insurgents. unfortunately, this u.s. navy s.e.a.l. also lost his life. his identity has not yet been released but he is being labeled a hero by the top brass in washington, including secretary of defense leon panetta and president barack obama who in a statement said he gave his life for his fellow americans and he and his teammates remind us once more of the selfless service that allows our nation to stay strong, safe and free. the american navy s.e.a.l. sacrifice has not been lost on dr. joseph's family who, in a statement relea

on and take a look at some other data here. what's the biggest threat to the u.s. economy? slow job growth, 9%. moving on here to the next one, the euro crisis, that's come way down, 11%. the next one is going to be 33%. the winner, the fiscal cliff, 35%. what are people saying about the fiscal cliff? we have people write in, and i believe that's what we'll look at next. we'll look at the probability of a u.s. recession. that has come up. in part because of the fiscal cliff concerns. it was 19% back in march. a high of 36%. so we're halfway between the low and the high pretty much. this is a 13-month high for the probability of recession. now we want to show you what people are saying about the fiscal cliff, allowing the economy to go over the cliff would be extremely reckless, says donnelly. they're going out to try to help the unemployment rate. wall street doesn't believe it's going to happen. they do believe it will help lower mortgage rates and the unemployment rate and not a lot of help expected for the stock market. melissa? >> steve, thanks for that. that's interesting stuff there. >>

the issue of same-sex marriage. the u.s. supreme court said yesterday it will hear two cases challenging laws that define marriage between a man and a woman. one of them is california's ban on same-sex marriage proposition 8 which voters approved in 2008. but the lower courts ruled that it was unconstitutional. and the other case agreed to hear is from new york. it challenges a federal law called the defense of marriage act which requires the federal government to prohibit federal recognition of same-sex marriages. it was passed back in 1996 and signed by president clinton. now reaction in san francisco's castro district included a range of emotions. yesterday's decision means same- sex couples in california must put marriage plans on hold. gay couples could have begun marrying immediately if the supreme court decided to deny review and let the lower court ruling stand. activists say they feel some momentum from the november elections. >> states legalized same-sex marriage just months ago. >> i want it to be tackled. i want to be married in any state and be recognized. >> many people say
